3DS surpasses 5 million in Japanese sales; breaks record

Nintendo has announced that their current flagship handheld device, the Nintendo 3DS, has surpassed 5 million units sold in Japan. The 3DS is hitting its stride in Japan as a glut of strong software releases are spurring the handheld to huge sales each week in Japanese sales charts. Hitting 5 million units sold in just 51 weeks on the market, the Nintendo 3DS has become the fastest selling gaming system of all time in Japan. The chart below (click to enlarge) shows how the Nintendo 3DS compares with other Nintendo platforms.
I think it's time for gaming journalists to kill the "handheld gaming is dead" rhetoric and just accept that the 3DS and Vita are viable platforms in today's world. Yes, iOS and Android are selling tons of games, but with the 3DS selling faster than the DS did in its first year, things are looking bright for Nintendo going forward.
